Just Walk Across the Room – Why? (Part 2)
In the Gospel of John, ch. 3, there’s a story of how Jesus reached out to a Jewish leader named Nicodemus. He was a great spiritual leader of his day – and well-respected teacher in the synagogue. Yet, when Jesus came on the scene, people flocked to him now. Nicodemus knew he was from God but didn’t quite get it – because in reality he was far from God as Jesus points out in this passage when he tells him “You must be born again.”
I think there are a lot of modern day Nicodeumses — people who are religious – but far from God. Let’s unpack what Jesus was saying here about how to be reborn from above … born again. Maybe that’s you. You’ve heard John 3:16 or saw it written at a football game or something – but you never fully understood what it meant. On the other hand, maybe you’re a Christ-follower already but you’re just not that confident in sharing or explaining to someone how they can be born-again – just like Jesus said here in John 3.
Many people today are looking for purpose. They seek significance, meaning and fulfillment, hoping to offer a contribution with their lives. However, in order to know our purpose, we must understand the larger context in which we live our lives. We’re characters in a larger story of God and his love for humankind – unfolding all around us. Truly understanding this story and our place in it what defines who we are, why we’re here and what we should be doing with our lives.
Unfortunately, in our day and age, most people’s quest for purpose and meaning is hindered because they are living outside of the real story of God. They may even live in the midst of it – but they’re not part of it – for whatever reason. So their understanding of life and purpose is skewed.
As followers of Jesus, we’re part of an incredible story that begins with “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” and ends with “Behold, I make all things new.” It’s a story that spans from eternity to eternity.
Sandwiched between eternity past and eternity future is the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ – the words of John 3:16 … So what is this gospel of Jesus Christ that God wants every single person on this planet to embrace? (SEE THE NEXT BLOG)
